ABOUT

This Spring Bryn Mawr College’s Dance Program is excited to become a part of living dance history through a production of Steps in the Street, choreographed by renowned modern dance choreographer Martha Graham in 1936. Set to a compelling score by modernist composer Wallingford Riegger Steps in the Street is part of a larger work Chronicle. Graham sought to express in this work her response to the rise of fascism in Europe, making Chronicle a powerful statement about the individual against tyrannical forces.

The project is coming to Bryn Mawr through a licensing arrangement with the Martha Graham Dance Company. Jennifer Conley, a reconstructor for the Company, a former member of the Martha Graham Dance Company and a choreographer in her own right, will come to Bryn Mawr to teach the work to student dancers in the Modern Ensemble over the course of three consecutive weekends beginning in February. The dancers will continue their rehearsals with Madeline Cantor, Associate Director of Bryn Mawr’s Dance Program, until the April performances.

In conjunction with this project another former member of the Martha Graham Dance Company, Carrie Ellmore-Tallitsch, will be teaching Graham technique in the Advanced Modern course during the first half of the semester.

Steps in the Street will be performed during Bryn Mawr’s Spring Dance Concert
